Acts 20:28

“You have heard it said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemies. But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.’” (Matthew 5:43-45)
Just before Jesus spoke these words, He had told His followers not to retaliate, to not take the law in your own hands. Jesus is telling us to “love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us”. By doing this we can overcome evil with good. The Pharisees claimed that people should hate their enemies, but Jesus is saying the opposite. This doesn’t mean we approve of our enemies’ actions or words, but what it does do is show others that Jesus’ teachings mean something to us – that Jesus is Lord of our life. Only God can change the heart of our “enemies”, so let’s trust that action to God by praying for them, and allowing the Holy Spirit to do His work in their hearts (and our hearts, too).
