Acts 20:28

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men…” (Matthew 6:2)
The term Jesus uses here is “hypocrites”, describing people who do good acts for appearances only – not out of compassion or other good motives. The actions may be good, but the motives are hollow. God will reward those who are motivated to honor and glorify God with their actions, not the ones where they are working to be seen by others. Jesus is teaching about giving to the needy, praying, and fasting. He tells His followers these things should be done to honor God, not to show others what you are doing. He asks us to “check” our motives for all the things that we do. As Jesus’ followers, we should act in a way that shows others Jesus’ love for them, not so we are praised by others.

Matthew 6:1-18 “What Do We Do?”

Moses spent forty years thinking he was somebody; forty years learning he was nobody; and forty years discovering what God can do with a nobody.
